*리딩 파빌리온 The Rapana Street Library Was Designed To Encourage Reading Among Young People

A team of architects and designers located in Varna, Bulgaria, decided to build a street library after seeing that many young people’s lives are almost entirely based around the digital era and therefore the popularity of books among this generation has decreased.

The open library provides easy access for the readers to browse books, plus there are sitting spaces and a tiny stage for street artists.

As Varna is a city that’s located by the seaside and is often called “The marine capital of Bulgaria”, the chosen shape of the library was inspired by the shell of a sea snail.

Named ‘Rapana’, the design was created using the parametric design tools Rhinoceros 3D and Grasshopper, before being produced using a CNC machine from wooden sheets. In total, the street library was built using 240 wooden pieces and it can hold 1500 books.
