EME157-Housing Extension in C/José Bastos

Housing Extension in C/José Bastos is a minimalist residence located in Madrid, Spain, designed by EME157. The key challenge in this renovation was integrating the new level with the existing structure, which features a distinctive brick facade enveloped in lush vegetation. The architects opted for a domed design to minimize the visual impact of the added height. This choice not only preserved the building’s external proportions but also enriched the interior with a sense of spaciousness and architectural elegance. Material selection played a pivotal role in distinguishing the new floor from the rest of the house.

Cork was chosen for its lightweight and insulating properties, offering a striking contrast to the solidity of the brickwork below. Zinc was used for the vaulted section, complementing the overall design while prioritizing the panoramic views available from this elevated position. The layout of the house is efficiently organized, with 50 square meters on the ground floor housing an entrance, a bedroom, and a bathroom. The upper floor, spanning 130 square meters, is divided into private and public zones. The private section includes a bedroom and a bathroom, while the public area features an open-plan kitchen, dining, and living space.

This area extends outward through large north facing windows and is further illuminated by a significant circular skylight, originally designed to light the stairwell. In terms of interior design, the approach is minimalist, employing a limited palette of materials. Mortar floors, polished stainless steel for countertops and shower areas, and plywood and linoleum for furniture, including kitchen units, cabinets, and even doors, define the space. This selection creates a deliberate contrast between cool and warm textures. Additionally, the exposed structure of the original concrete beams and pillars, contrasted with new slender circular metal pillars painted sky blue, harmonizes with the home’s stunning views.
