Tower Liverpool, UK, EcoLogicStudio and FCB studios. The concept of a double skin has beenexpanded taking as inspiration the sharkskin system; as for the shark, a secondlayer of micro fins protrudes from thesmooth skin to manipulate the flow locally, allowing for a differentiated optimalresponse. In our design solution a system of largewooden fins have been shaped andmanipulated to allow specific control of thewind flow: at ground level, in areas of intense trafficflow and air pollution (tunnel ventilation)the fins provoques micro- turbulenceproviding potential for particles dispersal.-at higher levels the fins' orientate ionfollows the one of the wind streams topromote air lifting and to generate pocketsof calm onto the glazed inner facadesurface.-near the sky gardens and terraces theflow is broken to reduce its speed but thedensity of the second skin is reduced toallow for maximum solar access.-on the northern elevations the densityreduces to allow optimal light penetration-the overall organisation of the second skinpromotes uninterrupted view at every levelof the tower-at roof top level the fins system bends tosupport air lifting over the tower-at ground floor the system proliferates ina canopy capable of protecting pedestrianaccess from downstream wind.
