An incredible facade lighting installation in collaboration between Milan based architecture practice Piuarch and .PSLAB Beirut, the objective of this project is to explore the possibilities of an object or a building from a different perspective giving new life to existing objects. The new facade has created a contrast effect between contemporary glowing white plastic and the old solid architectural facade, while casting a glow of light onto the street.

RE/DO

A collaborative light installation between PIUARCH Milan and .PSLAB
Beirut – Fuori Salone 2009

RE/DO installation was born from the collaboration between Milan based architecture practice Piuarch and .PSLAB Beirut which since 2004 explores new ideas pertaining to light designing and building site specific light solutions. The installation took place at Piuarch studio in Brera area during Milan Design Week in the context of Fuori Salone 2009 (21-27 April).

The conceptual installation expresses shared thoughts between Piuarch Milan and PSLAB Beirut on light and architecture, on design and rethinking an object or a building from a different perspective giving new life to existing objects.

An idea, 3 weeks to make it happen, 702 plastic gallons reinterpreted as lighting objects, wired and assembled as modules in Beirut and with these a 5,5 x 8 mt light wall built on site in Milan during a weekend as an intervention on the façade of the building and in the context of the courtyard where Piuarch studio is located.

A lot of public and success for the opening party on April 22nd to underline the real interest for an installation which goes beyond the limits of the exposition, of the explicit presentation, to express in a conceptual way, with an act in between a building intervention and an art installation, real and shared thoughts on the meaning of rethinking and redoing in a different way something already existing.

RE/DO
(24.03.09 - 22.04.09)

(CONSIDER IT AGAIN)
THE NEED FOR MORE DESIGNED OBJECTS.
HOW LONG WILL WE STILL DESIGN OBJECTS?
WHAT IS THE USE OF THE NEW VERSION VERSUS THE OLD ONE?
(TO CONSUME)

DESIGNING
THE RECYCLING PROCESS, LIKE DESIGNING THE LIFE OF ANY OBJECT, FROM ITS PRODUCTION DATE (DATE OF BIRTH) TO ITS FIRST LIFE/FIRST USE, GIVING IT A CHANCE TO A NEW LIFE WHERE IT CAN EXIST AGAIN.

(SHIFT FUNCTION)
BETWEEN THE FIRST LIFE AND THE SECOND ONE, A REINCARNATION OF AN OBJECT.
DESIGNING IN THIS CASE CONSISTS OF PRESENTING TO THE PUBLIC WHAT HAS BEEN ALREADY DESIGNED. DOING AGAIN AND DIFFERENTLY DEFINES THIS PROCESS.

(24.03.09) PROJECT STARTING DATE

THIS CONTEXTUAL SETTING COMES AS A REACTION TO CURRENT DESIGN PRACTICES (26.03.09);

TRYING TO RE/QUESTION THE USE OF DESIGNING AND PRODUCING WHEN THERE IS SATURATION IN ALL DOMAINS. THAT IS WHY THE PRACTICE OF RE/DOING AND RE/USING IS SUFFICIENT AND MEANINGFUL FOR OUR EXISTENCE IN THE NEW DESIGN WORLD, SHIFTING THE AIM FROM HOW TO DO THE OBJECT, TO HOW IT IS USED AGAIN (27.03.09).

HENCE, FROM A BASIC TOOL THAT WE USE AS RECIPIENT- THE GALLON (20X24) CM (24X30) CM (17X34) CM - WE BUILD (01.04.09) TWO MODULES OF (120X131) CM AND (48X131) CM, AND WITH THESE MODULES A WHOLE SURFACE OF (524X787) CM IS COVERED. USING THESE SMALL RECIPIENTS BECOMES AN EXERCISE OF PLAYFUL EXPLORATION AND DISCOVERY OF HOW TO CONSTRUCT A WHOLE FAÇADE.

THAT IS WHY WE DECIDED TO LOCATE OUR INSERTION AT THE EXTERNAL FAÇADE (21.04.09),
LETTING THE PEDESTRIANS DISCOVERS THE SETTING. THE INSTALLATION ALSO CASTS A GLOW OF LIGHT ONTO THE STREET, WHICH MAKES IT MORE FUNCTIONAL FOR THE SMALL COURTYARD, KEEPING AN IMPACT OF CONTRAST BETWEEN THE GLOWING WHITE PLASTIC AND THE OLD SOLID ARCHITECTURAL FAÇADES.

THE PLAY IS BETWEEN THE TWO SIDES OF THE INSTALLATION; SIDE ONE - THE BASES OF THE GALLONS FACE THE PASSAGE TRACING A SPECIFIC TEXTURE CREATED BY THE MOLD OF THE GALLON, AND SIDE TWO – LIGHT IS CONTAINED IN THE CAP OF THE GALLON FACING THE INSIDE FAÇADE, DRIVING THE PEDESTRIANS INSIDE THE SPACE, TO PERCEIVE AND DISCOVER THE LIGHT INSERTION VERSUS THE DENSITY THROUGH 702 RECIPIENTS BLOCKING THE LARGE OPENING.

WE FILL TO BECOME FULL.
