Marcus Tremonto for Moss NY 'Make Me' exhibition

Marcus Tremonto is a usual Yatzer suspect and after his magnificent work for Kidrobot and his customized, brighter than ever Munnies (see our Lightbotz special) strikes back with his latest creations for Moss gallery New York.This time Marcus presents for the “Make me” exhibition four limitededition lighting sculptures (Flor, Pipe Spill, Spill II and Steam),inspired by his original Spill series, created in 2008 and firstexhibited in Zurich. Marcus’s obsession with comics and popular culturein general is well known, as well as his love to combine it with strongforms and manipulated 2D and 3D images.

The result is some very eye catchingsculptures, so retro and so modern at the same time, determined to adda touch of super hero playfulness to your place. Marcus tell us aboutit: “Mywork is illustration based in origin, with inspiration from French Popcomics of the 60's, which so well delineated what was necessary totranslate the image; the suggestion of a solid form through simple linegesture. By manipulating and exaggerating size and form, the workforces the viewer to re-examine, question and consider the surroundingsin which it exists as part of the piece, much like a cell in a comic orframe that tells a story. As with all of my work I want the viewer tointeract with what they are experiencing, either by movement orquestion, thus allowing the relationship to begin between them and thepiece.”

What makes those particular works special is the employment of Electroluminescent paper,which consists of an organic material that emit photons (light) whenexcited by an electric current, sandwiched between two thin layers ofplastic. This method of producing light is distinct from standardincandescent lights in that there is no emission of heat.Electroluminescence was first developed in 1960 for use in automotiveinstrument panel backlighting.
