What would you expect from a Bavarian restaurant? Hearty food, good beer, a warm, solid and homely interior and a sense of tradition and comfort; Althaus, a new Bavarian restaurant, situated in the centre of Gydnia in Poland, meets all these expectations together with some fresh additional surprises too.
The design for Althaus by PB/STUDIO, in cooperation with Filip Kozarski,
combines traditional rustic elements with fresh modern style
statements. From the outside, this looks like a very new and stylish
addition to Poland's culinary scene. Inside, it gets even more exciting
where each room has been given a different character unified through
twists on traditional Bavarian design that meet modern style head on.
The restaurant serves Bavarian cuisine and the decor reflects this.
Elements of Southern Germany have been subtly implemented through the
inclusion of bottle green in the lamps and chandeliers, the dominant
painted units, the copper in the bold minimalistic light features and
the use of mosaic, referencing traditional beer production.
The ground and first floors are flooded with light from the
large glass split level facade, welcoming the buzz from the street
outside and making passersby stop to take note of the bold design.
On the ground floor, white washed panelled walls add a sense of space,
whilst the use of rustic cow hide for the seating and soft furnishings,
stunning stripped oak, open shelves displaying wine and books and a
freestanding vintage dresser give the restaurant a homely authentic
feel. On the upper floor, the bar and buffet areas amplify this rustic
vibe with bottle green panelling throughout.
The successful juxtaposition of traditional and modern styles is successful at Althaus because of the attention to detail.
The design showcases traditional elements within a more lighthearted
and simple environment than one would expect. Chequered table cloths on
traditional farmhouse tables are lit by simple sleek metal lamps, the
design invites in light through the use of the complimentary white
paint, working to enhance and refresh the statement bottle green shade
used throughout. Even the bathrooms are incredibly charming with the
fresh symmetry of the simple brick tiles, continued from the main
restaurant, complimenting the somewhat more ornate original monochrome
tiled floor.
Natural materials and the addition of quirky
features such as the contemporary modern deer heads and round mirrors
adorning the walls makes this place feel fun and far from stoic. Althaus’
multiple character invites you to enjoy time dining in what feels like a
traditional Bavarian restaurant that's been given some local character
enhancements whizzed through a stylish time machine. Althaus is chic because it feels both familiar and totally new at the same time.
