The theme video that greets visitors to Ventura Lambrate this year is a tempting invitation to pursue design... and literally, chase it. A bizarre troupe of chairs crosses the space at a fast pace, then more slowly and, after a few gym exercises, reappears in via Crespi 24 in the form of static architectural objects.

Produced after a stock of cherry wood was retrieved from a former carpenter’s shop deposit in Varese, Musical Chairs was presented at the Fuorisalone 2013 by Milanese studio MammaFotogramma. The chairs were originally conceived in collaboration with IED for an animation workshop, featuring a mobile structure with a system of mechanical joints that lent itself to all the configurations needed to produce a stop-motion video with more than 4000 frames.

“Movement is an integral part of our film but also of our architectural work”, explains Giulio Masotti of MammaFotogramma. “As an architect and designer, I see movement as a way to tease out all the details of an object.”

Alongside the chairs, the studio is also showcasing Woodskin, a composite material created by compressing several layers of plywood and fabric mesh. The fabric hangs from metal frames, suggesting endless potential applications. Its 3D pattern is generated by breaking the rigid surface of the wood down into triangular modules, coupling excellent structural performance with extreme pliability.

The Woodskin fabric was conceived as a prototype in 2012 for the Autoprogettazione 2.0 competition, and after being patented by the studio, it has now been industrialised following collaboration with the Biffi carpentry in Milan.

Both Woodskin and Musical Chairs are hybrid systems: they reveal an open approach to the design discipline that embraces evolution and movement and discards limited solutions, adapting to the most diverse production formats.
