I’d like to say that I am still young enough to remember the days when I was a kid, when playing with the other kids in my neighborhood was what I lived for. That was a time when we shared our toys and created imaginary worlds that developed our thinking, articulation of words and social behaviors. Nowadays, the activity of play has shifted to a digital world where children have lost the sense of congregation and social interaction. In the spirit of bringing back those strong roots of play, father and Brooklyn-based architect, Vlad Dragusin, has designed a new line of wooden toys called MO-TO. And it is through his strong reasoning and vision, Vlad in fact seeks to reintroduce the convivial style of play back into our lives.
As both parents and designers, the founders of Candylab Toys,
Vlad as well as Florin and Cristina, realize that both children and
their parents are drowning in a series of forgettable toys that break
and disassemble – inevitably ending up in piles of annoying,
miscellaneous piles of plastic parts that are later found all over the
house. As avid collectors of mid-century design, the three founders
loved all things that endured and withstood the test of time. In feeling
that quality and beauty could once again be brought back to the
consumer through small scale production, they have created a line of
heirloom wood toys that are simple, elegant and designed to last.
Lacking removable parts, these toys give children a chance to create
their own stories around the objects they play with.
The MO-TO car collection is a series of refined wood blocks on wheels. Reviving the glamorous 50's and 60's American modernist style into contemporary wood toy designs, MO-TO has
every element that is bound to get any child excited about toys and
American car history once again. Think elegant proportions reminiscent
of iconic automobiles, minute and complex carving details, perfectly
smooth rubber tires and lively graphics that all add up to a stunning
toy. They’re sure to delight parents with their durability as well as
avid collectors for their sense of t nostalgia that harps back to a
magnificent era of design and engineering.
They first launch includes three race cars (The GT-10, Carbon 77 and Doc Ryder) and one police car (The Squad Car) on Kickstarter
and they seem to be heading towards greatness. With sensibility in
their classic modern lines and the revival of the modern car era and
craftsmanship in full display, MO-TO seems to be making strides and is sure to be coveted by many children all around the world.
