*포스트 인더스트리얼 디자인, 호스텔 [ Dreimeta ] Superbude II

포스트 인더스트리얼 디자인이 지향하는 지점은 산업시대의 역사에 대한 존중과 앞으로 나아가야할 이곳만의 정체성의 확립에 있다. 이와같이 재구성된 호텔 및 호스텔은 값비싼 재료 대신, 기존 장소의 물성을 재구성함으로써 다이나믹하며 생동감 있는 공간을 연출한다. 감각적인 내부 디자인은 오히려 일반화된 불분명한 코드로 디자인된 여타 숙박공간과는 차별화되는 이곳만의 아이텐티를 창출하게 된다. 숙박시설은 대부분 낯선 이방인; 관광객들에게 열린 장소이다. 그들에게는 오히려 지역적 특징을 잘 드러내는 로컬 디자인을 통하여 이곳만의 정체성을 알리는 것이 중요할 것이다.

Hostel Rocks Industrial Chic

Dreimeta gives a former mail sorting office in Hamburg a new life with a concept that’s between a hostel and a hotel. Superbude II has a name that stems from the colloquial word ‘Buden’ meaning hotel rooms and communal areas, and references Hamburg’s history as a port city with its nautical and industrial aesthetic.

On the ground floor, a 50-m long wall of yellow timber panels incorporates a water station, guest safes, benches and storage. These vibrantly-stained planks, the type used as concrete formwork, are a recurring feature throughout the hotel, as is the twirling rope pattern burnt onto its surface.

In the guest rooms, Hamburg’s daily newspapers make up the wallpaper, offering local and current knowledge. And the familiar get re-appropriated in other ways too – coats are hung from plungers stuck to the wall and beer crates and wheelbarrows are scattered on the floor as casual seating. Rolf Heide‘s stackable beds are a handy addition, accommodating an increase in guests with ease. In the Rockstar-Suite – for meetings or intimate gigs – a stage hides a platform for beds underneath.

Various materials add to the hostel’s industrial appearance with scaffolding tubes forming the base structure for wardrobes and dining room tables. Bright orange safety nets, like those seen on building sites, serve as bed heads, whilst the zingy yellow accents throughout the building are reminiscent of high visibility construction-wear. Coupled with the other industrial aspects of the interior, the colours bring warmth and energy.
