to coincide with the exhibition ‘roots. indonesian contemporary art’ at the frankfurter kunstverein, indonesian artist joko avianto has wrapped the museum façade in a monumental bamboo weaving. using sturdy lengths of the natural material, avianto has formed a site-specific, large-scale work that both interacts with and juxtaposes the existing architectural fabric. a towering, basket-like interlace of rough, dry shoots undulates overhead visitors entering the museum, welcoming them into the exhibition about indonesian art with a medium that expresses the nature of the culture.

installed over the course of three weeks, avianto’s ‘pohon besar’ (big trees) incorporates 1,500 interlaced bamboo sticks, specifically cut-down to 6 meters long. in using bamboo, the artist refers to its traditional use as building material, which is gradually being replaced within a rapidly growing society and its industrial development.
