in the pristine gardens of le bristol paris hotel, french artist daniel buren has created a chromatic and luminous landscape for guests and visitors to experience. ‘une pause colorée’, on view at the historic site until october 6, wraps two intimate dining areas in colorful translucent walls and connects them with a prismatic pergola. tinted glass in blue, yellow, orange, red and purple create a prism overhead, subtly shifting in hue depending on the quality and position of sunlight filtering through. the tones are arranged in alphabetical order and respond to changes in weather and lighting.

dramatic shadows and refractions emit hints of saturation on an all-white walkway that joins the two spaces, surrounding visitors in an intense field of color. the installation interacts with both the architecture and ambiance of le bristol paris, subtly changing in response to the visitor’s vantage point. through ‘une pause colorée’, buren continues his more-than-50-year study of spacial relationships and color, and intends to widen previously unseen perspectives of the landmark parisian hotel.
