CN10 architects has added a concrete and marble pavilion to a cemetery in the north of italy. located in dalmine, a municipality with 25,000 inhabitants, the project provides 500 additional mausoleum drawers for the ossuaries and urns of the community’s deceased. the scheme comprises three identical blocks, which are comparable in size to the site’s adjacent chapels.

location: dalmine, italy

area: 75 sqm

budget: €200,000

function: new pavilion

dates: 2015-2016

client: comune di dalmine

crafted from white concrete and zandobbio marble, the architecture seeks to explore the themes of memory, and the complex relationship between life and death. CN10 architects’ design allows visitors to enter inside a secluded and protected space, which offers a very different atmosphere in comparison to the more open and exposed cemetery setting.

internally, the pavilion comprises two sections: a grid of marble mausoleum niches, and a curved section of concrete above. the enclosed space opens at its peak to provide unobstructed views of the sky. while this void allows sun and rain to enter the pavilion, the geometry of the scheme protects the drawers from the elements. combined, the three structures seek to define a serial system that can be repeated infinitely.
