hinsuke fujii architects has completed the ‘book shelf house’ in shinyoshida, yokohama, japan. the design is characterized by a diagonal wall that acts as an integrated and easy-to-use bookshelf. because all the shelves are inclined, it can be easily climbed without a ladder, and books of high position can be taken out and put back in. the playful approach adds a unique character to the home wherein furniture and structure are carefully integrated with one another.

the integrated bookshelf spans both levels of the home, and also contributes to the structural integrity of the home. importantly, shinsuke fujii has designed the bookshelf so that it will not collapse when an earthquake occurs. the oblique wall also serves to shelter the entrance of the home from heavy rainfall, common to the japanese region. the bookshelf, normally an external furnishing, becomes a core and central element of the house that translates throughout the entire structure.
