The project is based on the distribution of a catalogue of monoliths
along a pattern obtained from the study of the topography. The internal
structure of the monolith can suffer a double transformation described
as follows:"vertical fragmentation and substitution of stone by bamboo
columns when close to main trees."widening and shortening when placed
away from core built areas.REMEMBRANCE:The strong axis pointing at the
sea shall remember the direction of the incoming wave which caused the
destruction and devastation of the tsunami. This directionality sets
the alignment of a megalithic structure that will be recognized
throughout the whole memorial. Different people around the world shall
feel a connection with the souls of those already gone looking at the
ocean, the earth or the sky. The contemplation of these elements framed
by the monoliths, bamboos and existing trees connects the visitor with
those lost in the disaster. The memorial turns interactive from the
moment in which the monolith dissolves in the nature and becomes itself
the space of remembrance.RESPONSABILITY:The fact that the more
ecologically degraded areas of the coast suffered a more severe damage
by the tsunami should make us adopt a more sensitive attitude towards
nature. The memorial addresses this message by working on the
relationship between the natural and the artificial. As if a new wave
would be reshaping the entire landscape, the site is turned into a
combination of stone and bamboo, organized in a pattern that dissolves
into the forest.SEDIMENTATION:The monoliths can incorporate sets of
plaques including a sentence written by each visitor. The location of
the plaque will depend on its length and theme. The sedimentation of
the different messages of the people will configure through time a
collective skin on top of the body of the memorial.
