The Local Motors competition to design a car for Detroit closed earlier this month and the winners have been announced.
First prize of $1500 went to German student Dmytro Zyubyairov for his Michigan concept, a sleek and slightly Citroenesque-looking front-engined 2+2 shooting brake. Dymtro’s design mixed sharp styling with the practicality and cargo capacity afforded by a shooting brake.
As with all Local Motors competition winners, the intention is for the company to develop and manufacture the winning design at a specially-chosen facility in Detroit for sale at a later date. This tightly-focused and highly specialized way of working is key to Local Motors’ ethos. The company was started in 2008 by Jeff Jones and Jay Rogers with the mission to bring exciting cars to market, cars that are uniquely designed for a specific area and would be produced in that area also.
Second and third places in the competition, the brief for which was to create “a vehicle for the visionaries and entrepreneurs who will revitalize Detroit: [...] Small businesses like bakers, builders and mechanics…musicians and painters.” were awarded to, respectively, Mayeul Walser from France for his PS² concept and Mihai Panaitescu of Romania for his IRON 3-seater sportscar.
