A proposal by the young Danish Architects MASU PLANNING and CORNELIUS + VÖGE together with engineers Grontmij / Carl Bro, has been appointed as winner of the ambitious competition "City Island" at the port of Odense in Denmark.
The postindustrial area will be a cultural island for the entire city. A place that gathers people in the city and the entire region with activities of sports, living, leisure, art, conference, business, sustainability, culture and water activities.
The project introduces a masterplan for the area, and a strategy and concept for a new urban city life. A new structure of building and public spaces is integrated in the industrial history and heritage of the area making it possible to activate the area from the beginning.
- It's been a very exciting process to try to bring together the many and diverse ideas into a comprehensive plan. The winning proposal has a clear concept and also has a flexibility that makes it robust in relation to the future use the harbour, stated the jury.
The winning project is in many ways innovative in its design of a modern town. The project emphazises the experience of the harbour and the interaction between public places and buildings. The architectural relationship between building and urban spaces is unique to the project, which also focuses on experiencing and exposing the specific history of the site.
The competition has been implemented in two phases, the first phase was conducted in late 2009 as an open competition. There were three team appointed to proceed to the second phase.
