숲과 하나 되는 건축: 리오 페르디도 웨스트 방갈로 Studio Saxe-Rio Perdido West Bungalows
두 강이 만나는 땅에서
코스타리카 바가세스 지역의 화산 산맥 근처, 생태 도시 한복판에 특별한 건축이 자리한다. 무성한 숲 속에 떠있는 파빌리온들이 신비로운 협곡 풍경을 품으며 고요히 서있다.
리오 페르디도 웨스트 방갈로는 두 협곡이 만나는 높은 반도 지형에 자리잡는다. 이곳에서 리오 블랑코의 차가운 물줄기가 리오 페르디도의 따뜻한 급류와 만나 하나가 된다. 오랫동안 접근이 어려워 사람의 손길이 닿지 않았던 이 원시 협곡 지역은 이제 울창한 숲과 숨겨진 강을 품은 방갈로들의 무대가 되었다.
땅을 거스르지 않는 건축
Studio Saxe는 이 숲을 떠도는 파빌리온들이 호텔 경험을 한층 끌어올리면서도 땅에는 가볍게 머물기를 원했다. 각각의 방갈로는 가느다란 기둥 위에 떠있어 빗물과 야생동물이 그 아래로 자유롭게 흐를 수 있도록 했다. 경계 없는 유리창은 주변 숲과 협곡의 끊어지지 않는 파노라마를 선사한다.
현대적 안락함과 지역의 문화적 정수가 자연스럽게 어우러진 환경을 만들어내는 것이 목표였다. 한국의 전통 누각이 자연을 해치지 않고 조화를 추구했듯, 이곳의 건축도 같은 철학을 따른다.
시선을 이끄는 공간의 미학
정교하게 배치된 석재벽이 시각적 차단막 역할을 한다. 사생활을 보호하면서 동시에 협곡을 드러내고 건물을 대지에 단단히 고정시킨다. 이러한 설계는 공유 공간과 사적 공간 사이의 전환을 명확히 하며, 대지의 지형과 지역의 문화적 유산을 함께 반영한다.
섬세한 공간 계획과 조명 설계를 통해 열대의 단순함과 세련된 여유로움이 만나는 휴식처를 만들어냈다. 투숙객들은 주변 숲에 완전히 스며들면서도 사생활과 막힘없는 전망을 동시에 누릴 수 있다.
넓은 테라스와 사려 깊게 통합된 야외 샤워 시설은 건축과 자연 사이의 끊임없는 대화를 촉진한다. 이를 통해 머무는 이들은 이 놀라운 풍경의 시각적, 청각적 경험과 지속적으로 연결된다. 한편 침실과 욕실 사이의 은밀한 칸막이는 시선의 흐름을 막지 않으면서도 사생활을 보호하고, 길게 이어진 창문은 숨막히는 협곡 전망을 액자처럼 담아내어 자연을 각 공간의 중심으로 끌어들인다.
따뜻함이 스며든 내부
뉴욕 기반의 인테리어 디자이너 다니아 사라고비아가 가구를 선별했다. 따뜻한 색상과 자연 소재, 직조 질감을 통해 전체 건축 스타일과 조화를 이루는 응집력 있고 매력적인 내부 환경을 완성했다.
목재의 따스함과 석재의 견고함, 그리고 직물의 부드러움이 어우러져 마치 숲 속 오두막같은 아늑함을 선사한다. 이는 한국인이 추구하는 '편안한 집'의 개념과도 맞닿아 있다.
자연과 함께 숨쉬는 지속가능성
환경에 미치는 영향을 최소화하는 것을 원칙으로 삼았다. 방갈로들은 땅 위에 떠있어 자연의 물과 야생동물의 흐름을 보존한다. 긴 지붕 처마는 태양열을 차단하고 폭우로부터 보호하며, 에너지 사용을 줄이는 자연 냉각을 돕는다.
현지에서 조달한 목재와 석재, 기타 자연 소재들이 주변 숲과 조화를 이루며, 환경 보호와 코스타리카의 생태적 온전성에 대한 존중을 보여준다. 이는 우리나라의 전통 건축이 자연 소재를 활용해 환경과 조화를 추구했던 것과 같은 맥락이다.
땅의 리듬을 따르는 건설
방갈로들은 통일된 디자인 언어를 따르지만, 각 구조물은 지형의 다양한 고도와 조건에 맞게 적응한다. 조립식 기법이 건설을 간소화했지만 대지별 특성을 고려한 접근법을 유지하여 섬세한 생태계에 대한 방해를 최소화했다.
그 결과 현대적인 열대 건축이 자리 잡았다. 가벼운 접촉 철학에서 비롯되어 현대적 소재와 지역 장인정신의 신중한 통합을 통해 오래도록 지속될 수 있도록 만들어진 건축이다.

In the ecological town of Bagaces, Costa Rica, near the volcanic range, floating pavilions anchored in lush forests reveal mesmerizing canyon vistas.
Nestled on a raised peninsula formed by two converging canyons in Bagaces County, Costa Rica, the Rio Perdido West Bungalows immerse guests in a unique setting where the Rio Blanco’s cool waters merge with the warm currents of the Rio Perdido. Historically overlooked due to limited access, this pristine canyon area now provides the backdrop for bungalows that seamlessly connect visitors with the region’s lush forests and hidden river.
Studio Saxe envisioned these floating pavilions to elevate the hotel experience while lightly touching the land. Each bungalow rests on slender pilotis, allowing rainwater and wildlife to flow freely beneath. Frameless glass provides uninterrupted, panoramic views of the surrounding forest and canyon. The purpose was to craft an environment that seamlessly blends contemporary comfort with the region’s cultural essence.
Design
A carefully positioned stone wall functions as a visual barrier offering privacy while simultaneously revealing the canyon and anchoring the building to the ground. This design intention articulates the transition between shared and private spaces, reflecting both the site’s topography and the region’s cultural heritage.
Through thoughtful space planning, electromechanical coordination, and lighting design, our team created a retreat where tropical simplicity meets refined luxury, immersing guests in the surrounding forest while preserving privacy and unobstructed views.
Expansive terraces and thoughtfully integrated outdoor showers further foster a constant dialogue between the built environment and nature, ensuring guests remain linked to the sights and sounds of this remarkable landscape.. Meanwhile, a discreet partition between the bedroom and bathroom maintains privacy without breaking sight lines, and a long, uninterrupted window frames breathtaking canyon views, drawing nature into the heart of each space,
Interior Design
Dania Saragovia, a New York based interior designer, curated the furnishings by selecting a warm color palette, natural materials, and woven textures. These elements align with the overarching architectural style, resulting in a cohesive and inviting interior environment.
Sustainability
Emphasizing minimal impact, the bungalows hover above the ground to preserve the site’s natural flow of water and wildlife. Long roof overhangs help reduce solar heat gain and protect against heavy rains, supporting passive cooling strategies that cut down on energy use. Locally sourced wood, stone, and other natural materials harmonize with the surrounding forest, reinforcing a commitment to environmental stewardship and respect for Costa Rica’s ecological integrity.
Construction
Although the bungalows follow a unifying design language, each structure adapts to the terrain’s varying elevations and conditions. Prefabrication techniques streamlined construction while maintaining a site specific approach, ensuring minimal disruption to the delicate ecosystem. The result is a contemporary tropical architecture that stands in harmony with its setting, born from a light-touch philosophy and built to last through the careful integration of modern materials and regional craftsmanship.
