우리는 과연 이중적인 잣대에 자유로운가?
건축은 아이러니한 복합적인 상황을 슬기롭게 풀어나가는
일련의 행위를 수반하며 우리의 눈과 마음을 즐겁게 한다.
그래서 더욱더 드라마틱하고 흥미진진하다.
내셔널 아트 뮤지엄은 그런면에서 우리가 접하는 아이러니한 상황을
퍼블릭스페이스에서 다양한 공간과 프로그램으로 풀어내고 있다.
건축가의 고민처럼 다양한 이중성-과거와 미래, 낮과 밤, 내부와 외부,
침묵과 생동감, 거대함과 작음, 개별적인 것과 집단적인 것-의 관계를
경제와 아트의 경계선에 세워 어느 한쪽으로도 치우치지 않는
어반 퍼블릭 스페이스를 디자인한다.
이와 같은 관계의 발란스는 내외부를 구획하는 외피에 맺혀지며
다이나믹한 볼륨의 형태로 구현된다. 건축가의 의도처럼 각각의 갤러리들은
외부의 다양한 환경을 내부로 자신의 공간에 맞게 끌어들이며 관람객들에게
저마다 다른 초점으로 맞이하고 있다.
형태적인 볼륨감보다 내부 프로그램이 볼륨을 형성하는데 더 눈여겨봐야할
프로젝트 이다.

For their latest museum design in Beijing, Ben van Berkel and UNStudio have designed a formal expression which takes ques from Chinese culture to create an architecture that offers dynamically varied spaces for the NAMOC collections.  Based on uniting dualities – past and future, day and night, inside and outside, calm and dynamic, large and small, individual and collective – the two volumes reference ancient Chinese ‘stone drums’ and function in a contemporary way as a media facade with illuminated art projections.

The museum focuses on creating varied galleries for the artwork that offer extensive lighting possibilities and ample wall space in order to provide artists and curators with the optimal conditions in which to display their work and communicate their ideas. The circulation is divided into different routes which lead different visitor groups around themed sequences of art and additional programs.

“Whilst the architecture of the museum is represented by the ancient artifact of the stone drum, the art within represents its spirit, or its “essence”. In the same way that the agile strokes of ink in a Chinese painting give spirit to a blank piece of paper, the art collection gives spirit to the museum,” explained the designers.


In addition to the interior spaces, the museum’s situation within the urban context was of utmost importance.  The public urban plinth plateaus of the cultural district serve as connectors to bridge the city with the museum by connecting the street level, the the underground, and the museum volumes.
