Surrounded by sweeping pastures and rolling hills, this modern cabin incorporates a multitude of innovative contemporary concepts that are both creative and functional at the same time. Architects Pearson Design Group used materials in an imaginative way that define this home in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, USA as a unique and special place to live.

Built with concrete, wood and glazings and backed by a rolling hill, the weathered patina on the vertical siding seems to disappear against the landscape, while the butterfly roof blends in with the hillside shadows. The architects did an incredible job of "disguising" the dwelling.

Even up close the naturally weathered siding blends with the grasses in the foreground.

Its only from the front where the two volumes of the home are exposed, that the home takes on a presence of its own. Love the incorporation of post and beam to both hold the overhang of the roof as well as the deck. The overhang of the roof comprises one half of the Butterfly Roof.

The other half of the Butterfly roof creates a shelter for the back deck. This half of the roof exposes why the unique deep and slanted profile of the roof was chosen. It is a reverse angle to the angle of the concrete steps that follow the slope upwards to the deck. Clever.

The deck itself presents its own clever design. Here, the concrete padding has been fitted with a plank area rug. While that in itself is an unusual building feature, the custom wood block furnishings are just as unusual and just as innovative. All that's needed to finish of this outdoor room is a pendant above the table and a fireplace in the corner and there are both of those as well - the architects thought of everything.

As cozy as the outdoor living room was, the inside is even more so. Gauzy pendants suspended from the ceiling offer ethereal lighting while furs tossed on bentwood chairs add in the country charm. Additional wood block furniture is used for side tables while an indoor fireplace is well stocked in case of a chilly evening.

When the nights are warm and a fire isn't needed, a set of antlers fills the fireplace void. Natural wood continues the theme within the coffee tale but, for the sake of weight, the table is not one solid chunk, but rather 3 slices with the thinnest on top and the thickest as the base. Wrapped in furs and wood, the living room gives off the appearance of a home focussed completely on natural elements but in the distance a series of red lacquered Wishbone Chairs beg to differ.

In fact aside from the dining chairs, the kitchen bar stools really protest the nature theme. Even so, they too offer a thick and chunky profile, albeit a red, rotund one. With the bold splashes of red in the 3 bar seats and the 8 wishbone chairs, walnut lower cabinets and floating upper shelves and white marble backsplash and bar top, the kitchen presents a far more contrasting visual that is not in conflict with the subdued shades of the living room This balance is produced by the choice of visceral and visually stimulating furnishings in both spaces, creating a rhythm of interest that does not stop just because the colour does.

Even the bedroom uses form and shape to dazzle the space. The living edge and naturally checked headboard slab is a beauty.

Naturally weathered siding both inside and out combined with found antlers, living edge wood, furs and the odd punch of red make this home on the range a place full of contemporary imagination. Kudos to the architect.
