for the launch of jamie oliver’s italian restaurant in hong kong, the world-renowned chef approached barlo to decorate the walls and ceiling of a corridor in the restaurant. the result is a complex composition based on a foo dog, a mythical creature typically seen in the shape of statues that guard the front of chinese imperial palaces, tombs, and temples. using cans of spray paint, red flowers and yellow swirls add character to the body of the blue lion as it flows from the dark wooden planks to the black concrete regardless of the edges created by the intersection of the surfaces. the artwork is meant to bring life to the space by adding an element of surprise as diners walk down the shadowy hallway.
