product designer micaella pedros’ ‘joining bottles’ project uses shrunken plastic bottles as an experimental wood-joining technique. through the application of heat, the simple throw-away item is transformed into a wood bonding material offering a meaningful and accessible way to build functional structures.

materials such as wood and plastic are widely abundant in towns and cities. they lie waiting in anticipation to be reclaimed by someone who will grant them a new purpose and function. ‘joining bottles‘ seeks to develop a new belief system based on what we as individuals can achieve with what is available to us. in some countries the project can make a real difference by encouraging societies to collect bottles and wood waste, which as a result empowers individuals to help themselves.

the technique which was developed by micaella pedros can adapt itself to different shapes, allowing one to compose structures from any appropriate found object. the different types of wood and plastic bottles available dictate the final composition and aesthetic appearance. as a result an interesting dialogue is created, allowing space for spontaneity and experimentation between maker and material.
