Shepherd’s Bush is a minimal home located in London, United Kingdom, designed by Al-Jawad Pike. The scheme provides a new two-storey extension to a Victorian terraced house in West London. The client’s ambition to create a series of new rooms on the upper levels defined a massing approach where the new additions are formed from three interlocking masonry volumes. The existing narrow kitchen extension was dismantled in order to create a new kitchen and dining area at ground level with large skylight. The taller volume accommodates a study with an external terrace at first floor level; and a family bathroom at second floor level. A new zinc clad volume at roof level provides a guestroom with en-suite bathroom.

The distinct volumes are unified by their use of a single robust material – all brickwork is constructed with larger 20mm mortar joints in combination with a lime mortar slurry applied across all surfaces to emphasize the monolithic appearance and provide texture and relief to the building’s clear geometric forms. The formal simplicity is enriched by making the parapets in brickwork and concealing all rainwater downpipes and gutters within the building envelope. A loose, asymmetrical arrangement of natural anodized aluminum windows reinforce the sculptural quality of the building. Internally, a reduced palette of whitewashed walls, natural oak furniture and pale grey terrazzo floors and kitchen elements provide a simple and functional aesthetic.
