as part of the redevelopment of place du casino in monte carlo, monaco, five pavilions have been realized to temporarily house twenty-one boutiques during construction work. designed by architect richard martinet of paris-based affine design, the bulbous structures are clad in diagonal-shaped aluminum panels, and range in size from 220 – 600 square meters each. with a completion date set for 2018, the major renovation project is planned to take four years, and includes the restoration of the complex’s hotel and the replacement of its meeting halls (sporting d’hiver) with three mixed use buildings to accommodate shops, residences, offices, and public spaces.

due to the structures’ temporary nature, the structure and cladding systems were designed for easy disassembly. for the construction of these temporary pavilions, existing trees in the ‘jardins des boulingrins’ had to moved. these plants were transplanted in a nursery, and will be replanted in their original location after the boutiques are dismounted. the garden site features an 8% slope, and is located above a subterranean parking garage.

to negotiate the structural constraints of the project, affine design collaborated with research offices TESS and SETEC. each pavilion is comprised of two independent shells: an inner framework element and an outer formal surface.
