japanese firm hiroyuki ito architects has constructed a concrete apartment building in a ward located outside of central tokyo. the structure, titled ‘BLOOM’, contains ten individual residential units, including duplex properties, spread across the scheme’s five storeys. inside the staggered monolithic volume, each unit comprises a balcony allowing the external space to be experienced as a natural continuation of the home’s living quarters. the use of concrete is continued throughout the interior, while timber serves as a visual counterpoint to the material’s heavyweight appearance. the building’s shape references the form of the neighborhood’s surrounding structures, standing as a bold reinterpretation of suburban japanese living.
