스티븐홀이 설계한 새로운 문화시설이 뉴욕 이스트리버와 만나는 뾰죽한 대지 끝자락에 착공한다. 연면적 22,000sqf, 헌터포인트 커뮤니티 라이브어리는 점차 개인화(사유화)되는 아일랜드씨티의 워터프론트에 주요한 공용공간으로, 도서관, 어린이 놀이공간, 청소년 전용공간 그리고 컨퍼런스 룸 및 야외원형극장이 제안된다.

사용자의 움직이 새겨진 빌딩 오프닝(창문)과 알루미늄 페인트로 채색된 노출콘크리트 구조물은 건축물의 인상적인 외형을 생성하는 동시에 맨하튼 특유의 전망을 제공한다. 내부 프로그램 또한 동측면에 커팅된 오프닝을 통해 외부로 노출된다.

향후 도심공용공간으로써 자리를 기대해 본다.

located on a prominent site in along new york’s east river, steven holl‘s design for a new cultural facility has now broken ground. the 22,000 square foot ‘hunters point community library’ will stand as an important public space within the increasingly privatized long island city waterfront. as well as the library, the scheme also contains a children’s area, a dedicated space for teenagers, a conference room and an outdoor amphitheater.

as users move through the building, glazed cuts in the façade offer views of the distinctive manhattan skyline, while the library’s concrete structure is exposed and aluminum painted, giving the exterior a subtle sparkle. the program’s separation can be read in the sculpted cuts of the east face of the building, with one façade opening for each area.

at night the glowing presence of the library along the waterfront joins the pepsi and ‘long island’ sign at the old gantry to become a beacon for the new community place. in celebration of the groundbreaking, an exhibition chronicling the building’s design process will open at the sculpturecenter from now until june 8, 2015.
