Knight Associates-Lonely Melrose

Lonely Melrose is a minimalist space located in Los Angeles, California, designed by Knight Associates. The refurbishing project encompassed the main retail area and storefront, modernizing what was once a gallery into an inviting space for both analogue and digital interaction. While the design maintains a forward thinking approach towards digital integration, the primary focus remains on customer service. Aesthetically, the Melrose boutique presents a dialogue of contrast between hard and soft surfaces, balancing confidence with intimacy. It distinguishes itself from its New Zealand counterparts by adopting a softer, more tactile interior, featuring materials such as Douglas Fir, aged brass, pitted plaster, and stained Elm.

These materials, while muted in appearance, continue to convey the brand’s commitment to raw sophistication and simplicity. The design’s romantic overtones are expressed through modern forms, where service and customer experience take precedence. Flexible joinery and open plan showroom areas can be subtly partitioned for private consultations and fittings, ensuring the space remains welcoming yet discreet. Freestanding vintage furniture smartly solves storage needs in the main retail spaces, while administrative and stock areas are strategically placed at the back of the store. Perhaps one of the most striking features is the newly constructed façade joinery, finished in cathedral glass. It filters the natural light, casting a soft, veiled view of the interior and adding a touch of discretion for the customers.
