Reed Hilderbrand-Tekαkαpimək Visitor Contact Station
대지와 건축의 조화로운 만남
카타딘 우즈 앤 워터스 국립 천연기념물의 룩아웃 마운틴 정상에 서면 장엄한 풍경이 펼쳐집니다. 이곳에 조용히 내려앉은 테카카피메크 방문자 안내소는 약 220평 규모의 따뜻한 목조 건물과 23에이커에 달하는 광활한 조경이 어우러진 공간입니다. 이 아름다운 대지는 아주 오랜 세월 전부터 페놉스콧 네이션 부족이 삶의 터전을 일구며 자연과 공존해 온 전통적인 본고장이기도 합니다.
이름에 깃든 숭고한 의미와 연대
테카카피메크는 페놉스콧어로 시선이 닿는 가장 먼 곳이라는 아름다운 뜻을 품고 있습니다. 현지 발음으로는 데가-가비-묵에 가깝습니다. 이 의미 깊은 공간은 국립공원관리청의 자문을 바탕으로 와바나키 자문 위원회와 엘리엇스빌 재단이 맺은 끈끈한 파트너십의 결과물입니다. 이곳은 그저 기능적인 건물이 아닙니다. 와바나키족이 지켜온 생명과 대지에 대한 지혜를 설계와 시공 전반에 깊숙이 새겨 넣은 협업의 결정체입니다. 한국 전통 건축에서 바깥 풍경을 공간 안으로 조화롭게 빌려오는 차경의 미학처럼, 이 안내소 역시 주변의 울창한 숲을 존중하며 그 풍경 속으로 자연스럽게 스며듭니다.
통합된 시각으로 빚어낸 결실
안내소의 건축과 조경은 치열하고도 감동적인 협업이 빚어낸 결실입니다. 엘리엇스빌 재단을 비롯해 믹맥 네이션, 홀튼 밴드 말리싯 인디언, 페놉스콧 네이션, 파사마쿼디 부족의 대표자들이 뜻을 하나로 모았습니다. 여기에 손더스 아키텍처, 리드 힐더브랜드 랜드스케이프 아키텍처, 위슈드두잇올 같은 전문가 집단과 국립공원관리청이 힘을 보탰습니다. 수많은 사상과 문화적 서사, 그리고 다양한 아이디어들이 와바나키 고유의 정서와 만나 마침내 굳건하고 통합된 시각을 완성했습니다. 이 하나 된 시각은 방문객이 처음 마주하는 진입부부터 전시가 열리는 내부 공간, 그리고 탁 트인 바깥 조경에 이르기까지 방문자 안내소 전체를 관통하는 든든한 길잡이가 되어줍니다.

Situated in the present and traditional homeland of the Penobscot Nation, Tekαkαpimək Visitor Contact Station is a stunning 7,900 square-foot building and 23acre landscape atop Lookout Mountain in Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument.
Tekαkαpimək — pronounced deh gah gah bee mook, Penobscot for “as far as one can see” — arose from a partnership between a Wabanaki Advisory Board and Elliotsville Foundation, in consultation with National Park Service. Tekαkαpimək is a work of collaborative design and construction, intentionally imbued with Wabanaki knowledge.
Architectural and landscape designs resulted from a process between Elliotsville Foundation, representatives of the Mi’kmaq Nation, Houlton Band of Maliseet Indians, Penobscot Nation, Passamaquoddy Tribe; Saunders Architecture, Reed Hilderbrand Landscape Architecture, WeShouldDoItAll, and National Park Service (NPS). A multitude of thoughts, cultural narratives, and ideas have formed a collective lens with Wabanaki sensibilities, helping orient the interior, landscape and exhibit design of the Contact Station, as epicenter of the Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument.
