도시의 심장에서
브라질 상파울루의 피녜이로스(Pinheiros) 지구는 역사적 분위기와 활기찬 문화가 공존하는 곳이다. 카르데알 아르코베르데(Cardeal Arcoverde)와 카포테 발렌테(Capote Valente) 두 거리가 만나는 이 중요한 모퉁이에, FGMF Arquitetos가 설계하고 Idea!Zarvos가 개발한 21층 규모의 복합용도 건물 발렌테(Valente)가 서 있다. 주거와 업무가 하나의 덩어리 안에서 입체적으로 얽히는 이 건물은, 상파울루의 고층 스카이라인 속에서도 단번에 눈을 사로잡는 존재다.

볼륨이 말하는 언어
발렌테를 처음 마주하는 순간, 시선은 자연스럽게 건물 전체를 훑어 올라간다. 크림빛 콘크리트로 마감된 직사각형 볼륨들이 크기와 높이를 달리하며 층층이 솟아오른다. 어떤 볼륨은 정면을 향해 앞으로 밀고 나오고, 또 어떤 볼륨은 옆으로 비껴 나와 깊고 선명한 그림자를 드리운다. 오후 햇살 아래 이 요철(凹凸)들이 만드는 명암의 층위는, 단순한 외장 패턴이 아니라 건물이 숨 쉬고 있다는 인상을 준다.

FGMF의 파트너 페르난도 포르테(Fernando Forte)는 "발렌테는 안에서 밖으로 설계됐다"고 밝힌다. Idea!Zarvos의 구상은 기업 공간의 입체적 점유(three-dimensional occupation)에서 출발했다. 트리플렉스와 듀플렉스 유닛이 허용하는 공간 배치는 시장에서 흔히 볼 수 없는 방식으로 다양하며, 사용자의 필요에 따라 높은 유연성을 발휘한다. 발코니 규정과 다양한 레이아웃 구현의 의도가 맞물렸다. 그 결과, 깊이 있게 조각된 볼륨과 모서리를 정의하는 창호 프레임이 이 건물만의 독특한 입체 조형을 완성했다.

건물이 두 도로와 접하는 정면 두 개 면에는 테라스들이 거리 위로 뻗어 나오고, 나머지 두 면은 수직으로 평탄하게 처리되어 대조를 이룬다. 지상부에서 건물은 한 발 물러서며 보행자를 위한 너른 보도 공간을 내어준다. 도시와의 관계에서 발렌테가 취하는 첫 번째 태도다.

나무와 빛이 만드는 결
각 볼륨의 넓은 개구부를 채우는 것은 구리빛 목재 멀리언(mullion, 창살 프레임)이 격자를 이루는 창호다. 어떤 칸은 외여닫이 창으로, 또 어떤 칸은 미닫이 창으로 열린다. 유리와 목재가 조합된 이 격자창은 건물 전체 입면을 따뜻하게 물들인다. 콘크리트의 차분한 크림빛과 목재의 온기가 만나 발렌테를 단단하면서도 생기 있는 표정으로 만드는 주역이다.

각 볼륨의 상단에는 식재 화단이 자리한다. 조경가 호드리고 올리베이라(Rodrigo Oliveira)가 설계한 이 화단들은 훗날 큰 나무로 자랄 식물들을 품을 예정이다. 건물이 완전히 성숙했을 때, 발렌테의 입면은 콘크리트와 목재, 그리고 녹음이 어우러지는 복합적인 표정을 갖추게 될 것이다.

안으로 들어서면
지상층 로비는 좁고 긴 형태로, 내부로 시선을 모아주는 구성이다. 한쪽 벽 전체를 덮은 정교한 석재 타일이 공간에 무게감을 더하고, 맞은편에 놓인 황토색 패브릭 벤치가 차분한 따뜻함을 건넨다. 공간 깊숙이 자리한 목재 격자 창호 너머로 가로의 나무들이 내다보이고, Lightsource가 설계한 앰버 톤 조명이 석재 표면 위로 은은하게 내려앉는다. 이 로비는 화려함보다 절제를 선택한 공간이다. 하지만 그 안에 머무는 동안, 발렌테의 건축 언어 전체가 이미 압축되어 있음을 느끼게 된다.

삶과 일이 섞이는 곳
로비에서 올라서면 오피스 층이 이어진다. 각 층은 개방된 넓은 바닥 구조를 기반으로 내부 계단이 한 층 또는 두 층을 더 연결하는 방식이다. 트리플렉스 유닛에서는 메자닌과 통로가 공중을 가로질러 공간을 나누고, 유리 입면을 완전히 열면 돌출된 테라스와 내부가 하나로 이어진다. 층을 오를수록 상파울루의 지붕 풍경이 점점 더 넓게 펼쳐지고, 도시와 건물 사이의 경계가 자연스럽게 흐려진다.

18층에는 녹지 공간이 마련되어 있으며, 최상층부에는 향후 레스토랑이 들어설 공간도 조성되어 있다. Idea!Zarvos의 창립 파트너 오타비오 자르보스(Otavio Zarvos)는 "발렌테에서 사람들이 살고, 일하고, 더 자유롭게 움직이는 장소를 만들고 싶었다"고 말한다. 이처럼 발렌테는 단순히 오피스와 주거를 한 건물에 쌓아 올린 것이 아니다. 사람이 서로 다른 방식으로 도시 안에 존재하는 방법을 새로 제안하는 건물이다.

FGMF Arquitetos completes pixelated skyscraper in Brazil

Local studio FGMF Arquitetos has completed a mixeduse building in São Paulo made of stacked "protruding rectangular volumes" that contain multi-level office spaces and residences on the top floor.

At 21 storeys high, the Valente building was developed by Idea!Zarvos.

The firm worked with FGMF Arquitetos on a previous building in 2016, which explored atypical office layouts and helped to inform the design of Valente, according to the team.

The building is located in "the heart" of São Paulo's Pinheiros district, known for its historic character and cultural attractions, such as nightlife and restaurants.

"Valente was designed from the inside out," said FGMF partner Fernando Forte.

"Idea!Zarvos' concept was based on a threedimensional occupation of corporate space, with triplex and duplex units that allow spatial arrangements very different from those typically found in the market, highly adaptable to occupants' needs."

"Due to balcony regulations and the intention to create varied layouts, the building's distinctive volumetry emerged, with deeply worked volumes and window frames that define the corner."

The building's volume is based on the concept of "rectangles with single or doubleheight ceilings, projecting forward" to create balconies, according to the studio.

It contains a groundfloor lobby, a stack of triplex apartments and duplex apartments in the middle, and two residential floors at the top. The eighteenth floor features a greenspace, while the upper levels also contain space for a future restaurant.

At the ground level, the building is set back to provide additional sidewalk space at its "important corner" in São Paulo, which sits at the intersection of Cardeal Arcoverde and Capote Valente streets.

Its rectangular volumes then stretch upwards in a variety of sizes and dimensions, with terraces hanging over both street facades, while the back two facades are flat.

The wide open glazed pockets of each volume "sometimes open as awning windows, sometimes as sliding windows", according to the studio, and each are lined with thin, wooden mullions.

The volumes are also topped with planters, with landscape design by Rodrigo Oliveira, that will contain large trees.

The rest of the building is clad in small white tiles.

Inside, the lobby is narrow, with stone tiles cladding one wall. A yellow couch is placed to the side, while a front desk leads to an access door to the floors above.

The office floors are wide open and contain staircases that lead to either one or two additional floors, depending on the layout.

Mezzanines and walkways pass through the office levels, while the glass facades can be opened or lead onto the protruding terraces.

"Our intention with Valente was to create a place where people could live, work, and move around with greater ease," said Idea!Zarvos founding partner Otavio Zarvos.
