엘 하우스(El House)는 단순한 주거 공간을 넘어, 대가족과 절친한 친구들, 그리고 가까운 동료들을 위한 따뜻한 안식처로 기획되었다. 자카르타(Jakarta)의 주거지 한편, 강변 대지에 자리 잡은 이 집은 세대와 관계를 아우르는 유대의 공간을 만들고자 했던 진심 어린 바람에서 출발한다. 와하나 아키텍츠(Wahana Architects)는 그 바람에 답하듯, 편안함과 여유가 자연스럽게 모임의 분위기를 이끄는 집을 설계했다. 특별한 격식 없이도 삶이 흘러들고 사람이 모이는 곳, 바로 그런 공간이었다.


삶의 구심점
집의 공간 질서는 거실과 식당이 하나로 연결된 넓은 사회적 중심부에서 사방으로 퍼져나간다. 이 개방된 공간은 소박한 저녁 모임과 규모 있는 파티 모두를 품을 만큼 유연하다. 저녁이 되면 접이식 유리 도어가 활짝 열려 실내와 수영장 데크가 하나로 이어지고, 그 안으로 따뜻한 실내 조명과 열대 녹음이 서로를 반영하며 어우러진다. 거실 한편에는 섬세하게 설계된 프로급 주방이 자리하며, 주방 역시 이 연결과 환대의 정신을 한층 깊게 뒷받침한다. 여기서 음식을 만들고, 나누고, 함께하는 행위 자체가 집의 철학을 완성한다.


켜와 켜 사이 — 반사 수조가 만드는 경계
건축적으로 엘 하우스를 이해하는 핵심은 "켜의 중첩(layering)"이라는 개념에 있다. 이 집은 가늘고 긴 전이 공간을 경계 삼아 두 개의 뚜렷한 볼륨으로 나뉜다. 각 영역은 저마다 고유한 성격을 품으면서도 서로를 향해 열려 있다. 전이 공간의 중심에는 선형으로 뻗은 반사 수조가 놓였다. 수면은 주변의 하늘과 식물, 건물의 매스를 조용히 담아내며, 그 앞에 선 이로 하여금 잠시 멈추어 바라보게 만든다. 이 공간은 단순한 통로가 아니라 감각의 전환점이다. 실내에서 수조를 사이에 두고 너머의 녹음을 바라볼 때, 자연과 건축 사이의 경계는 흐릿하게 풀린다.


갈색의 외피 — 켜를 두른 오른쪽 볼륨
엘 하우스 오른쪽 볼륨은 갈색 톤의 외피 레이어로 감싸져 있다. 이 외피는 건물을 외부 환경으로부터 보호하는 실용적 역할에 그치지 않고, 표정 있는 파사드를 완성하는 표현적 레이어로 기능한다. 질감과 깊이, 독자적인 정체성을 파사드에 부여하는 이 갈색 외피는 솔리드한 매스, 전이의 여백, 물, 그리고 중첩된 표면들이 이루는 더 큰 건축적 대화 속에 자리한다. 거리에서 바라보면 격자 패턴의 조적 담장 너머로 브라운 매스가 황혼빛 하늘에 우뚝 선 모습이 눈에 들어오는데, 이 수직 볼륨은 주변 주거지의 경사 지붕들과 강한 대비를 이루며 조용히 자기 존재를 드러낸다.


함께하는 건축
절제되면서도 서정적인 엘 하우스는 결국 동시대적 주거 삶의 비전을 한 지붕 아래 응축한다. 공간의 명료성과 소재의 깊이감, 그리고 환대의 정신이 하나로 어우러져 El House만의 건축을 완성한다. 서재에서는 목재 천장과 바닥재가 아늑한 온기를 만들고, 전면 유리 너머 정원을 향해 열린 시선이 집 안에서도 자연을 가까이 두게 한다. 경계 없이 이어지는 공간의 흐름은 사람들 사이의 상호작용을 자연스럽게 촉진하고, 열림과 포용의 감각을 집 전체에 불어넣는다. 엘 하우스는 건축이 어떻게 관계를 담는 그릇이 될 수 있는지를, 조용하고도 분명하게 보여주는 집이다.

More than a residence, El House was conceived as a welcoming oasis for extended family, close friends, and professional colleagues, and was designed to foster connections across generations and relationships. Driven by that heartfelt ambition, Wahana Architects focused on creating a truly welcoming place where ease and comfort would set the table for an ambiance conducive to a variety of conceived gatherings.

Guided by that concept, the spatial order of the home radiates outward from a central core featuring an expansive living and dining area, conceived as the social heart of the home. The open setting offers tremendous flexibility for accommodating both intimate dinners and larger social gatherings, supported by a carefully integrated professional-grade kitchen that extends the notion of connectivity and refined hospitality.

From an architectural perspective, the concept of layering dictates the spatial hierarchy of the project, with El House divided into two distinct volumes demarcated by a slender, elongated transitional space. Articulated as a linear reflective pond, the visual gesture induces moments of pause and contemplation, while simultaneously establishing a sensory relationship with the home's natural surroundings.

The right wing of El House is wrapped in the embrace of a brown toned secondary skin that serves as both a protective veil and an expressive layer. While adding texture, depth, and a distinct identity to the facade, the envelope forms part of a broader architectural interplay between solid masses, transitional voids, water, and layered surfaces.

Both restrained and evocative, El House ultimately embodies a contemporary vision of domestic life convergence. Spatial clarity, material depth, and hospitality frame an architecture centered on togetherness, where seamless continuity encourages interaction and reinforces a sense of openness and inclusivity.
