*드롭워터 디자인 뮤지엄 [ pei zhu nearing ] shenzhen OCT design museum

중국 선전에 건립된 디자인 뮤지엄은
획기적인 기술에 대한 진보를 보여주는 중요한 산물이다.
문화, 레크레이션 그리고 각종 엔터테이너의 공간으로 활용될
회전구체는 물방울의 낙하 순간을 포착한 이미지를 공간으로 구현함으로써
현실적인 중력에 대한 강한 반발력이 느껴지는 형상으로 구체화 된다.
중력을 거스르는 듯한 볼륨의 형상을 구현하는 캔틸레버 스트럭쳐는
표면을 감싸는 메탈판넬로 숨겨져 형상의 아이텐티를 부각시키는데
이것은 포스트모더니즘에 반하는 새로운 건축양식을 보여준다.
구조의 당위성을 디자인 영역으로 끌어오는 일련의 건축양식에서
그것을 거부하는 건축양식의 대두는 기술의 진보와 새로운 공간을 요구하는
시대의 흐름에 발맞추어 나타나는 현실이 아닐까 싶다.
여기에 곡면을 따라 흐르는 빛의 산란은 볼륨자체를 공기중으로 흩어 버림으로써
자신의 볼륨마저 부정하여 형태의 당위성에 기반을 둔 이전의 건축양식을 또한번 엎지른다.

공간을 구획하는 첫번째 요인은 중력의 법칙을 거스르지 못하는
구조적 요인에서 기인한다. 하지만 기술력의 진보는 그와 같은
공간적 한계를 극복시키며 디자인 뮤지엄과 같이 공간에 무한한 확장성을 안겨준다.
이렇게 공간이 한계를 뛰어 넘을때 비로서 우리는 진보된 미래를 보게되고
더 나아가 발전적인 프로그램과 공간에 사용에 대하여 논의 할 수 있다.
단순히 형태에 대한 미적이야기를 나누는 것은 일차원적이 이야기 일 뿐이고
우리는 그러한 공간이 향후 우리 생활공간에 미칠 영향에 대하여 이야기 해야 한다.

led by chinese architect zhu pei, designboom received a tour through the construction site for the 'OCT design museum' by beijing-based practice studio pei zhu while in shenzhen, china. positioned within a cultural, recreation and entertainment development along the gulf, the spheroidal exterior evokes the imagery of a water droplet captured in time. its unique shape attracts visitors through the encompassing public plaza. the shell inclines outward from a constrained footprint to form an integrated overhang while a cantilever extends to encourage circulation below, guiding visitors around the building towards the entrance.

the lustrous metal cladding of the curved facade mirrors surrounding activity while triangulated windows and skylights mimic the scattered illuminated reflections found on the water's surface. the array of penetrations similarly introduce dappled  streams of daylight within the internal atrium.

the 2011 SZHK biennale
in shenzhen, china ran from december 8th through december 11th 2011.
the scale of certain projects is such that the architect becomes not only a designer of buildings but also city planner and landscape
architect and the hong kong & shenzhen bi-city biennale of urbanism \ architecture reflects this in its theme:
architecture creates cities - cities create architecture.
the SZHK biennale is the first to focus on urbanism as an ongoing theme to explore issues of the city as an active agent in contemporary culture.
the program included more than 30 exhibitions, symposiums, panel discussions and performances.
terence riley has been appointed chief curator (he is the first international curator for the event).
the hong kong edition will work to complement the shenzhen biennale in an integrative way and is curated by gene king and anderson lee currently under preparation and due to open in february 2012.
designboom is the principal international media partner of the SZHK biennale.

'shenzhen builds'
designboom was given the opportunity to visit the construction site of the terminal extension, as part of the program 'shenzhen builds'.
the buildings being built in shenzhen today are setting international standards for most of the building types:
the 'shenzhen builds' exhibition, curated by terence riley, focuses on 5 new and upcoming buildings in the city by coop himmelb(l)au / wolf prix, massimiliano and doriana fuksas, OMA / rem koolhaas, urbanus, and atelier FCJZ / yung ho chang.
on show are models, animations and drawings, including other developmental materials to demonstrate how these projects were conceived.
