A Monument at Home
No stranger to building temporary out-of-place dwellings in the sky, Tatzu Nishi has incorporated New York City’s Columbus monument in his latest public installation.
The Japanese artist – who has for years been enshrining urban landmarks worldwide in his signature elevated environments – was commissioned by the city’s Public Art Fund, a lively organization that infuses the Big Apple’s streets with art.
After climbing up a fairly unattractive scaffolding, the visitor enters a stand-alone living room centred around the Columbus sculpture, which stands boldly in the middle. The arrangement allows visitors to behold the monument from an unprecedentedly convenient viewpoint, while making themselves at home on a sofa or inspecting the interiors – which include an iconically American wallpaper.
The artwork will be open until 18 November.
