selling freshly baked cheese tarts made famous originally from hokkaido; the new store by japanese designer yusuke seki has opened in a kyoto shopping district.
the store by yusuke seki is based inside a traditional building with layers of the existing architectural fabric revealed throughout. the cheese tarts are freshly baked from the kitchen located at the rear is on view to customers through a glass window. afterwards, each delicious product is lined up and displayed on a counter constructed of pieces of lego.
at the same time, the walls of the retail area employ ‘shitaji-mado’, a lattice framework technique traditionally used in the construction of japanese teahouses. the exact specifications of the grid is approached by each location in japan’s respective guild of artisans, with no two being exactly the same. left partially exposed, these walls allow customers to interact with a new iteration of tradition, while simultaneously encouraging an interaction with the older exterior wall cladding.
