Anglesea 해안가 자생 나무림 속에 한 주택이 서 있다. 1960년대 미드센추리 모더니즘의 정신을 간직한 이 집은 최근 진정성 있는 재건축을 거쳐 새로운 모습으로 완성되었다. 3개 침실과 2개 욕실로 구성된 이 주택의 원형은 매력적이었으나, 단열이 부족하고 동선이 불편했다. 이후 여러 차례 증축이 이루어졌지만 공간은 점점 어긋났다. 건축가는 원형을 허물고 다시 짓기로 결정했다. 그러나 단순한 신축이 아니라, 본래의 정신을 존중하며 현대적 편의를 더하는 세심한 재건축이었다.
클라이언트의 요구는 명확했다. 층고를 확보하고, 거실을 중정 정원과 하나의 공간으로 연결하는 것. 건축가는 원래의 L자형 구조를 유지했다. 기존 기둥과 비례가 새 설계의 기준이 되었다. 모든 설계 결정은 미드센추리 본질을 존중하면서도 현대적 성능 기준과 산불 방재 구역 요건을 충족하도록 이루어졌다.
숲길을 따라 집에 다가가면 자생 나무들이 건축을 감싼다. 나무 사이로 난 길은 부드럽게 굽이치며 진입을 안내한다. 거실은 이제 중정 정원으로 자연스레 이어진다. 해안가 자생 나무들이 공간에 고유한 분위기를 만든다. 침실과 욕실은 기능적이고 간결하게 구성했다. 복잡함 없이 본질에 집중한 공간이다.
재료는 솔직하고 본질적으로 다가오도록 선택했다. 소박한 질감의 가방처리 벽돌, 따스한 블랙벗 목재로 마감한 천장, 그리고 섬세하게 계획된 창호가 온기를 만든다. 각 요소는 절제된 섬세함으로 완성되었다. 과하지 않지만 충분히 정제되었다.
Anglesea 주택은 과거를 존중하며 미래를 준비한다. 낯익으면서도 더 나은 공간이다. 원형의 정신에 충실하면서, 지금 이 시대의 삶을 담아낸다.

MGAO-House in Anglesea
The house at Anglesea has been rebuilt with integrity, keeping the soul of its mid-century origins intact. A three-bedroom, two bathroom alterations and additions project, the original home was charming but impractical. With poor insulation and awkward add-ons, the best option was to sensitively rebuild, replacing sections with better quality.
The client's brief was to raise the ceiling height and open the living spaces to the courtyard garden. The original L-shaped layout was maintained. Columns and existing proportions guided the new plan. Every decision respected the mid-century character while bringing it up to modern standards and bushfire zoning.
The living space now flows into the garden. Existing native trees add character. The bedrooms and bathrooms are functional and simple. Materials are chosen to feel honest and purposeful. Bagged brick, blackbutt timber ceilings, and carefully detailed windows create a sense of warmth.
Each element is refined, not overdone. House at Anglesea honours the past while quietly improving it. It is a home that feels familiar, but better – true to its roots and ready for the future.
