라트비아 리가 교외, 도시와 숲이 만나는 경계

라트비아 리가의 교외 지역, 새로 조성된 아파트 단지와 울창한 숲이 맞닿은 지점에 하우스 코메트가 들어섰다. 프로젝트 이름은 대지가 위치한 코메타스 거리(Komētas Iela, 혜성 거리)에서 따왔다. 지역 건축 스튜디오 Gaiss가 설계한 이 175제곱미터 규모의 주택은 전통 라트비아 헛간의 형태를 현대적으로 재해석했다.

도심에서 거리가 있는 이 위치 덕분에 대담한 색채와 형태가 가능했다. Gaiss는 도시와 자연이 교차하는 특수한 맥락을 건축 언어로 풀어냈다.

붉은 목재와 흰색 금속, 두 문화의 만남

하우스 코메트의 외관은 두 가지 소재가 대비를 이룬다. 하단부는 짙은 적갈색으로 칠한 목재 판넬이 수직으로 늘어서 있고, 상단부와 지붕은 밝은 흰색 골판 금속으로 덮였다. 이 골판 금속은 표면에 물결 무늬를 새겨 빛에 따라 미묘한 그림자를 드리운다.

붉은 외벽은 의뢰인 가족이 겨울마다 방문하는 스웨덴의 전통 농가에서 영감을 받았다. 스웨덴 시골에서 흔히 볼 수 있는 붉은 헛간의 따뜻한 색감을 그대로 담았다. 반면 흰색 골판 금속은 의뢰인이 관심을 두었던 일본 건축의 간결함과 절제를 반영한다. 두 문화의 건축 언어가 하나의 형태 안에서 어우러진다.

대지를 둘러싼 담장 역시 같은 붉은색으로 칠해져 건물과 하나로 이어진다. 주변 녹지와 대비되는 이 강렬한 색채는 집의 정체성을 명확히 드러낸다.

중앙 홀이 만드는 수직 연결

의뢰인은 내부를 전면 목재로 마감할 것을 요청했다. Gaiss는 이 요구를 구조 방식으로 풀었다. 여러 목재판을 접착해 만든 집성목재로 기둥과 패널을 구성하고, 이를 그대로 노출해 흰색으로 착색했다. 밝은 목재 질감이 벽과 천장 전체를 감싸 따뜻한 분위기를 형성한다.

집의 중심에는 넓은 중앙 홀이 자리한다. 이 공간은 단순한 현관이 아니라 건물 전체의 동선을 연결하는 허브다. 1층의 주침실, 거실과 주방, 전면 마당, 뒤편 정원이 모두 이곳에서 만난다. 높은 천장이 1층에서 2층까지 수직으로 트여 있고, 2층의 브리지형 복도가 이 공간을 가로지른다.

이 브리지는 2층 양쪽에 위치한 어린이 침실들을 잇는다. 중앙 홀에 서면 1층 부모 공간과 2층 아이들 공간이 눈과 몸으로 이어지는 것을 느낀다. 건물의 단면 전체가 하나의 공간처럼 느껴진다.

거실에서 정원으로, 트인 일상

중앙 홀 한쪽으로 거실, 식당, 주방이 하나로 이어진 공용 공간이 펼쳐진다. 이곳 역시 천장이 높아 개방감이 크다. 전면 유리창과 슬라이딩 도어가 서쪽 면 전체를 감싸며, 거주자는 실내에서 정원을 한눈에 내다본다.

목재 데크 테라스가 거실에서 자연스럽게 이어진다. 이 테라스는 집의 서쪽 끝을 감싸며 실내 공간을 확장한다. 중앙 홀과 주침실 옆에도 각각 작은 테라스가 있어 거주자는 집 곳곳에서 밖과 만난다.

Gaiss는 건물 형태와 색채, 소재의 대비를 통해 주변과 구별되는 정체성을 만들었다. 동시에 중앙 홀을 중심으로 한 명쾌한 동선 구성과 전면 개방으로 일상의 편안함을 담았다. 하우스 코메트는 두 문화의 건축 언어를 빌려 라트비아 교외의 새로운 거주 방식을 제시한다.

Red painted timber walls and a white corrugated metal roof form the "bold and distinctive" exterior of House Comet, a family home in Riga, Latvia, designed by local architecture studio Gaiss.

Named after its location on Komētas Iela, or Comet Street, in Riga's suburbs, the 175-square metre home is a contemporary take on a traditional Latvian barn, informed by its surroundings where urban and rural meet.

"The neighbourhood marks a transition between a newly developed apartment district and an intact green forest area in Riga," Gaiss told Dezeen.

"Given its distance from the denser parts of the city, bold and distinctive architecture seemed appropriate here," it added.

The clients asked that House Comet's interior be fully lined in wood. This led Gaiss to construct the home with a frame and panels of glue-laminated timber, which are left exposed and stained white for the walls and ceilings.

Externally, the red painted timber planks of the lower portion were painted a deep shade of red in reference to the red barns common in Sweden, where the clients ski during winter. This is mirrored in the colour of the fence that wraps the home's garden.

By contrast, the upper section of House Comet's exterior and its roof are clad in white corrugated metal, which, according to Gaiss, was informed by the client's interest in Japanese architecture.

The home's main bedroom and its double height living, dining and kitchen area sit on either side of a large entrance hall at its centre, which is crossed overhead by a bridge-like landing that connects the first-floor children's bedrooms.

Full height windows and sliding glass doors open the living area out onto a timber terrace that wraps the home's western end. Smaller terraces sit alongside the entrance hall and main bedroom.

"The entrance hall serves as the central circulation node, connecting all zones of the house, both floors, the front courtyard, and the garden," the studio explained.

"This space opens up the full cross section of the building, visually and physically linking the children's area on the first floor to the parents' and common area on the ground floor," it added.
