스페인 건축 스튜디오 Lucas y Hernández-Gil이 마드리드에 완성한 화장품 매장은 단순한 상업 공간을 넘어선다. 라코니쿰(Laconicum)이라는 이름부터 특별하다. 고대 로마 욕장에서 사람들이 땀을 흘리며 몸을 정화하던 건식 발한실을 뜻하는 이 단어는, 뷰티 제품을 판매하는 이 30제곱미터 공간에 철학적 깊이를 부여한다. 미용은 단순한 외모 가꾸기가 아니라 문명의 몸짓이자 근원적 의식이라는 것. 스튜디오는 고전 세계에 뿌리를 둔 이 개념을 현대적 언어와 색채로 재해석했다.
매장이 들어선 곳은 마드리드 피아몬테 거리의 오래된 건물이다. 이전에는 바닥재 쇼룸으로 쓰였던 이 공간의 기존 마감을 모두 걷어내자, 파인 기둥들이 모습을 드러냈다. 스튜디오는 이 기둥들을 그대로 살렸다. 목재의 옹이와 결이 또렷한 이 구조체들은 공간을 나누는 동시에 연결한다. 좁고 긴 평면에서 기둥들은 일종의 문처럼 작동하며, 방문객을 두 개의 영역으로 자연스럽게 안내한다.
거리에서 매장으로 들어서는 순간부터 공간은 말을 걸기 시작한다. 벽돌 아치가 이루는 진입부를 지나면, 천장에서 쏟아지는 원형 빛을 마주하게 된다. 이 커다란 원형 조명은 라코니쿰 천장에 뚫린 개구부를 연상시킨다. 고대 로마인들이 증기와 열기 속에서 위를 올려다보며 마주했을 그 빛. 천장 전체를 감싼 석회 도료의 깊은 로럴 그린은 고요함을 더한다. 색은 부드럽게 스며들어 공간 전체를 차분하게 가라앉힌다.
벽면을 따라 배치된 디스플레이 유닛들은 일정한 리듬을 만든다. 금속과 목재로 제작된 이 선반들은 미국 미술가 도널드 저드(Donald Judd)의 미니멀리즘을 떠올리게 한다. 단순한 형태의 반복이 만드는 질서감. 각 유닛에는 거울이 내장되어 있어 향수와 화장품을 확인하는 실용적 기능도 겸한다. 특히 눈길을 끄는 것은 오렌지에서 그린으로 이어지는 그라데이션 색상의 선반들이다. 이들은 벽에 걸린 작은 조각처럼 보이기도 하고, 공간에 생기를 불어넣는 색채 악센트로 작동하기도 한다.
공간 중앙에는 핑크빛 에스트레모스 대리석으로 만든 테이블이 놓여 있다. 포르투갈산 이 대리석의 매끈하고 차가운 표면은 유기적 곡선을 그리며, 주변의 기하학적 요소들과 대비를 이룬다. 테이블을 지탱하는 금속 프레임은 붉은색으로 마감되어 또 다른 색채 레이어를 더한다. 바닥의 마이크로 시멘트는 중성적 베이스로 기능하며, 와이어 메시로 만든 스토리지 유닛들은 투명한 질감으로 공간에 가벼움을 부여한다. 한쪽 구석에 자리한 오렌지색 안락의자는 스튜디오의 자매 브랜드 Kresta Design이 디자인한 것으로, 방문객에게 잠시 머물 자리를 제안한다.
소재들은 각자의 언어로 말한다. 석회 도료가 만드는 부드러운 표면, 원목 기둥의 거친 질감, 대리석의 차가운 광택, 메시의 투명한 가벼움. 이들은 충돌하지 않고 공존하며, 공간에 깊이감을 부여한다. 로럴 그린과 크림색 파인, 핑크와 오렌지가 이루는 색채 구성은 차분하면서도 생동감 있다. 무엇보다 이 모든 요소들은 하나의 방향을 가리킨다. 미용이라는 행위를 일상의 루틴에서 의식의 영역으로 끌어올리는 것.
라코니쿰은 화장품을 파는 곳이지만, 동시에 잠시 멈춰 서서 자신을 돌아보는 공간이기도 하다. 고대 로마인들이 발한실에서 몸을 정화하며 하루를 정리했듯이, 이곳을 찾는 사람들도 뷰티 제품을 고르는 행위를 통해 자신을 돌보는 시간을 갖는다. 30제곱미터의 작은 공간이지만, 그 안에는 오래된 지혜와 현대적 감각이 조화롭게 공존한다. 스튜디오가 말했듯, 케어는 문명화된 몸짓이다. 그리고 이 매장은 그 몸짓을 위한 무대이자, 일상을 의식으로 승화시키는 장소다.

Spanish studio Lucas y HernándezGil has completed a cosmetics store in Madrid featuring exposed wooden pillars and a material palette intended to evoke the calming atmosphere of an ancient Roman sweating room.
Laconicum, a beauty product retailer, approached Lucas y HernándezGil to design its first permanent physical store on Madrid's Piamonte street.
The company had been impressed by the studio's playful renovation of a rural guesthouse and set a brief calling for a space that offers its customers a unique and memorable experience.
Laconicum's name references a dry saunalike space found in ancient Roman bathhouses, which informed an interior design focused on the idea of beauty as a kind of elemental ritual.
"The project approaches care as a civilising gesture, as a form of culture that has its roots in the classical world," the studio told Dezeen. "We wanted to evoke this concept but bring it into our language and use of colour."
The unit was previously occupied by a flooring showroom and was initially stripped back to its bare shell, revealing original details, including pine pillars that were then incorporated into the scheme.
"The pillars help to structure the space and create a dialogue with the materials used in the rest of the elements," the studio added.
"The premises are narrow and elongated, and these columns establish a sequence of two spaces and function as a large door."
The interior includes several references to the Roman laconica, including large light fixtures that recall the circular openings in the ceilings of these round rooms.
Limewash paint in a deep laurel-green hue helps to create a serene environment, while the wallmounted displays are laid out in a regular rhythm that brings a sense of order to the space.
The bespoke metal and wood display units evoke the minimalist works of American artist Donald Judd and provide space for presenting perfumes and cosmetics, with built-in mirrors adding a practical detail.
At the centre of the room, custommade tables with pink Estremoz marble tops and metal frames introduce organic shapes that contrast with the more structured shelving.
The 30-squaremetre retail space features a micro cement floor and additional storage made from wire mesh. A service counter in one corner is furnished with a bright-orange armchair developed by Lucas y Hernández-Gil's sister studio Kresta Design.
