빛과 그림자의 건축, 알바루 시자의 포르투 수도원 증축 Álvaro Siza Vieira-Monastery of Leça do Balio and contemporary
사진작가 다비드 알트라트의 렌즈에 담긴 것은 시간의 층위가 공존하는 장소다. 포르투갈 레사 두 발리우의 수도원과 그 옆에 선 알바루 시자의 백색 콘크리트 증축이 만나는 곳. 함부르크에서 활동하는 알트라트는 이 두 건축이 만들어내는 빛과 그림자의 대화를 기록했다.
레사 두 발리우 수도원은 로마 시대 기초 위에 세워진 중세 순례지였다. 리브라리아 렐루 재단이 이곳을 문화 거점이자 공공 공간으로 되살리면서, 시자에게 현대적 개입을 의뢰했다. 역사 유적 옆에 새로운 건축을 세우는 일. 시자는 과거를 지우지 않으면서도 현재의 언어로 말하는 방식을 선택했다.
증축 공간은 두 개의 수직 볼륨으로 이루어져 있다. 그 사이로 펼쳐진 중정은 단단하게 다진 자갈로 포장되어 있고, 푸른 하늘을 액자처럼 담아낸다. 시자는 본질만 남겼다. 매끈한 콘크리트 표면, 세심하게 다듬은 질감, 그리고 치밀하게 계산된 빛과 그림자의 대화가 사색의 공간을 만든다. 시자는 모든 접합부와 선, 개구부를 의도적으로 배치했다. 프리츠커상 수상자 시자 특유의 명료함과 정밀함이 드러나는 지점이다.
중정 중앙에는 독립 조각 웨이페어러가 서 있다. 통과와 성찰을 상징하는 이 조각은 공간에 사유의 무게를 더한다. 조경가 시도니우 파르달은 주변 지형에 절제된 동선과 식재를 배치했다. 증축이 역사적 맥락 속에 자연스럽게 자리 잡도록 한 것이다.
알트라트의 사진은 수 세기에 걸친 돌 벽과 현대의 콘크리트가 나누는 대화를 포착한다. 시자의 건축은 역사를 존중하면서도 그 의미를 더욱 깊게 한다. 이 프로젝트는 현대 건축이 유산 앞에서 취할 수 있는 태도의 한 전형을 보여준다. 과거를 압도하지 않으면서도 존재감을 잃지 않는 절제된 건축. 그것이 시자가 레사 두 발리우에 남긴 답이다.

The design is pared back to essentials: smooth concrete surfaces, carefully considered textures, and a meticulous play of light and shadow foster a contemplative atmosphere. Every junction, line, and opening is purposefully composed, reflecting the Pritzker Prize winning architect’s signature clarity and precision. At the heart of the courtyard, the freestanding sculpture Wayfarer anchors the space, evoking themes of passage, reflection, and introspection. Landscape architect Sidónio Pardal extends this dialogue into the surrounding terrain with a subtle arrangement of paths and planted areas, embedding the structure harmoniously within its historic setting.
The project is documented through the lens of David Altrath, whose images capture the dialogue between centuries-old walls and contemporary intervention. The Hamburg based photographer highlights how Siza’s architecture respects and amplifies the monastery’s historical resonance.
