The last decade has seen a proliferation of coworking spaces spanning both Europe and the US catering to a burgeoning class of freelancers, start-ups and other nomadic professionals. While a growing market with an ever-increasing number of players means that professionals have access to better services, it also means that it is becoming ever more difficult for brands to stand out, especially in an already crowded destination such as New York City. For coworking concept The Malin, the secret is focusing on elevated design, exquisite craftsmanship and tailored amenities in combination with providing a boutique experience – the brand boasts a modest capacity of 200-250 memberships per location. Case in point, The Malin Williamsburg, the brand’s first location outside Manhattan, which opened its doors last year welcoming design minded members to an eclectically curated workspace framed by panoramic vistas of Manhattan and Brooklyn.

Perched on the 9th floor of The William Vale, a contemporary brutalist structure by Brooklyn architects Albo Liberis that also houses a luxury hotel of the same name, The Malin’s foray into Brooklyn prioritizes shared space with mixed seating taking up most of its 1,000 square metres of space which also offers dedicated desks, private offices for small teams, meeting rooms and several phone booths for video conferencing plus a library.

Designed by The Malin’s in house team in partnership with Fettle Design, the space could easily have become a corporate-lacquered minimalist workplace, what with the building’s massive concrete trusses punctuating the expansive floor-to-ceiling windows, polished concrete flooring and bulky concrete pillars, if it wasn’t for the brand’s commitment to handcrafted design and superior craftsmanship. The new space is thus imbued with warmth and personality thanks to tactile, natural materials such as solid oak millwork and reeded glass partitions, custom furnishings upholstered in plush velvets, bouclés and leathers, and high pile rugs, all in vibrant hues that reflect the surrounding views. Luxe marbles and travertine for tables and counters bring a heightened sense of elegance while charming light fittings add more touches of drama in juxtaposition with the building’s brutalist architecture, ultimately tying everything together in reflection of The Malin’s ethos where, as co-founder Ciaran McGuigan explains, “even the smallest of details is purposeful”.
